Dry Coal Cleaning Methods

Technology: Electrostatic Separation
Organization: CSIRO Division of Energy Technology
Description: A dry coal beneficiation process that utilizes either a high Tension Electro Dynamic Separator (EDS) or an electrostatic separator (ESS) to separate fine coal and wastes.
Status: N/A
Advantages: N/A
Limitations: 1.) The feed material needs to be closely sized.
2.) The outlook for this technology is not good as past reults have been generally poor, with low yields and little ash reduction.

Technology: Rare Earth Magnetic Separators (REMS)
Organization: N/A
Description: A dry coal beneficiation process that utilizes REMS to separate fine coal and wastes.
Status: N/A
Advantages: 1.) Past tests show that while the cleaning efficiency and ash reduction were less than that obtainable by wet cleaning methods, the specific energy of the dry cleaned product was slightly higher due to its low moisture content.
2.) A comparison study shows that a 360 tph REMS plant would cost 13% less than a conventional wet plant.
3.) The comparison study also shows that the operating costs would be 50% of the wet plant costs for production of a fine coal product of equivalent energy level.
4.) Can handle a wider feed size range, higher tonnage, and more moist feed than the EDS and ESS.

Description: This patented (# 6170768) device is a gas linear particle accelerator, which conveys and processes bulk materials at high velocity in a particle isolated state.
Status: Research
Advantages: By beneficiating coal without the use of water, the amount of future coal slurry is reduced.
